Sample – Magnetic Media Policy

February 6, 2013

Policy

All forms of magnetic storage media (i.e., floppy disk, data tape, data cartridge, flash drive storage drive, thumb drives, etc) must be properly secured in a locked file cabinet or desk when not in use. Open storage of magnetic media is prohibited. Media must be properly labeled to reflect the highest classification of data stored on the media (i.e., Corporate Private, Corporate Confidential, or none). A supervisor or manager must approve the removal of media containing sensitive corporate information from a corporate facility.

Purpose: Magnetic media is highly susceptible to theft due to its compact size and portability. In addition, media storage devices can contain large volumes of information, which, if compromised, could have an adverse impact to the Company. Employees are responsible for properly protecting and accounting for sensitive Company information resources.
