Symantec Veritas – Storage Migrator Process Unix Clients and Unix Storage Migrator (SM) Server
September 3, 2012Benefits:
- Able to increase the amount of available disk space by moving old, unused data to tape.
- Will decrease the amount of data needed to be backed up.
- Basically transparent to the end user.
- Automated, based on pre-determined criteria.
Disadvantages:
- It is Unix only.
- There are a few minute delays when pulling files from tape are not explained to the user.
- Poor tools exist for determining how much will be migrated ahead of time.
- Must use NetBackup as the backup software to prevent “non-informed” backup software from migrating files back to disk from tape when they back them up.
- The current recommended size of file migration is 1 MB or larger due to the database and stub size.
- A deleted file is only “marked” for deletion on tape. Eventually, a tape could have many deleted files and the tape could be “reconciled” to recover space, however that process is time consuming and would require operator manual actions.
- To conserve resources, the duplicate tapes are generally not moved offsite until full – which may be several weeks.
- Disaster recovery would not be a top priority. The normal backup/restore environment would be recovered first. Current DR Procedures have the Storage Migrator system rated very low. Symantec Technical Support would be needed to recover the system.
- The system currently can only be used in corporate network areas.
