Introduction

Host monitoring is a network monitor application and process. You should be able to create monitoring profiles and objects you wish to monitor with pre-defined or customized thresholds. 

Among the many checks you should look for:

1. Monitor any TCP services,
2. Ping a host,
3. Check the available disk space,
4. Check integrity of your files
5. Check the integrity of a web site,
6. Test your SQL and Oracle database servers,
7. Check SMTP/POP/IMAP/DNS,
8. Test Windows services and Unix Deamons,
9. Monitor CPU Usage,
10. Monitor authentication /LDAP servers,
11. Monitor processes

Host monitor should check network servers at regular intervals and takes pre-defined actions if a device does not respond. The following responses are common:

1. A dashboard visual and sound warning,
2. Send an E-mail message to a mailbox,
3. Send a message to a pager or mobile phone,
4. Execute external programs,
5. Restart NT services,
6. Restart open system deamons
7. Reboot local or remote computers,
8. VPN into a network and perform checks / actions. 

Host monitoring can generate results with log files and reports. Host monitoring provides different log file detail levels and log file formats and can be configured to suit business and technical needs.  

A Report Manager and Log Analyzer allow you to create and customize reports and can illustrate separate information for each host or group of hosts. The Log Analyzer can collect statistical information and show graphs of all request times for specific time periods for all or individual servers. Using the statistical information, an administrator can analyze request times for specific servers over a period of time.
