BSDI 3.1 Client OS Install – Setup

Always verify and adapt these recommendations for the OS Install.

BSDI 3.1 Client OS Install – Setup

1.      Insert the CD into the CDROM drive
2.      Insert the boot floppy into the floppy drive.
3.      Reboot the machine using your favorite method.
4.      When you see the blue screen with the yellow writing, do the following
5.      Press Enter
6.      Press Enter
7.      Press Enter
8.      Type none, Press Enter
9.      Press Enter
10.  Press Enter at the “reserve space for dos” screen (that’s a default of “no”)
11.  Type erase, Press Enter
12.  When the filesystem is done, Press Enter for “no”.
13.  It will install patches next.
14.  When done, Press Enter
15.  Press Enter again
16.  Set the root password and press enter
17.  Press Enter to reboot
18.  Eject the floppy and CDROM while it is rebooting.
19.  After the reboot, Type manual and Press Enter
20.  Type none (for license) and Press Enter
21.  Press Enter
22.  Type Eastern, Press Enter
23.  Enter the fully qualified name (e.g. newhost.com)
24.  Choose your interface (should only be one.  If not choose the lowest # interface)
25.  Press Enter
26.  Enter the IP address
27.  Press Enter
28.  Enter the netmask (e.g. 255.255.255.0)
29.  Press Enter
30.  Choose 10baseT for media type
31.  Press Enter
32.  Press enter for “yes”
33.  The machine will reboot and give you a login prompt.
34.  Login as root.
35.  Edit the file /etc/resolv.conf (you will be creating it)
36.  On the first line enter  domain newhost.com
37.  On the second line enter nameserver <inside ip of firewall>
38.  Write and quit
39.  You should be able to ping the inside interface of your firewall and (if you have DNS set up properly) you should be able to nslookup as well.
