Project Manager’s Checklist

A.
Project Organization
1.
Is there a formal Project Mission Statement stating the objectives and strategy of the project?
2.
Does the Mission Statement define:
  a. The approach to managing the project?
  b. The scope and objectives of the project?
  c. The business problem(s) to be solved?
  d. The major phases & deliverables of the project?
  e. The general responsibilities of each party involved?
  f. The responsibility for development and maintenance of a detailed work plan?
3.
Have the roles and reporting relationships been documented in a project organization chart?
4.
Have arrangements been made to obtain all the appropriate skills, including:
  a. Project Management?
  b. Application and technical software expertise?
  c. Detailed knowledge of business processes?
  d. Clerical and word processing support?
  e. Programming and system administration resources?
5.
Have all arrangements with any third party consultants, programmers, and temporary services been documented and approved by management, including:
  a. Fee structures?
  b. Deliverables?
  c. Staffing and management responsibilities?
6.
Is top management aware of the impact the project will have on the organization?
7.
Do all project team members, including third parties, understand and agree with their role in the project?
8.
Does each application area (General Accounting, Order Processing, etc.) have at least one team member whose time is at least 50% dedicated to the project for its duration?
9.
Is the time commitment to the project for all team members understood and agreed to by their permanent line management and supervisors?
10.
Has a suitable work space been established, including phones,  meeting rooms, and proper office equipment, away from the normal working environment?
11.
Has a function/feature analysis been prepared to compare any package software being used to business processes and requirements?
B.
Work Planning
1.
Has a detailed work plan been prepared, and does it include:
  a. All phases, activities and tasks within the project scope?
  b. Assignment of responsibility for all tasks?
  c. Reasonable target dates for all assigned tasks?
  d. All project milestones and deliverables?
  e. Budgets for work days or hours, including a reasonable contingency factor?
  f. Time allotted for project management and administration?
  g. Consideration of staff turnover, vacations, training, and outside activities?
   
2.
Has a high-level gantt chart been prepared for communicating project time frames and overview with management?
3.
Does the work plan allow for a learning curve and orientation for team members without prior project, technical, or industry experience?
