Sample Exchange 2000 Migration Plan

Backup & restore the complete email system to alternate servers, this is to ensure internal & external (Internet) email can be processed with this standby system.
1. Install IIS if it isn’t already installed. Ensure IIS is installed.
2. Uninstall Outlook from the server. (Outlook & Exchange don’t play well together)
3. Change Windows AD to “Native Mode”. (do not do this if you still have BDC’s)
4. Delete all “Hidden” & orphaned mailboxes to clean things up.
5. Run Integrity check on databases & Exchange Directory (services must be stopped)

6. Run Defragmentation on databases & Exchange Directory (services must be stopped)
eseutil /d priv.edbeseutil /d pub.edbeseutil /d dir.edb7. Restart the Exchange Services.8. Confirm that the registry contains the correct path to the MTADATA directory. The key is:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesMSExchangeMTAParametersMTA database path9. Stop the Exchange Server MTA10. Backup all MTADATADB*.DAT files (Important!)11. Run MTACHECK (keep running this utility until “Database clean, no errors detected” appears)

12. Restart all Exchange services13. Delete the server that is in the DMZ at this time if you are going to replace hardware (be sure there is NO data!) You will install from scratch later. If you are going to upgrade this server too, then do NOTdelete it. Note: this is done from the Exchange 5.5 Administrator program.14. Run the KCC using the following steps.15. Start the Exchange 5.5 Administrator and navigate down to the server object that you are working on.16. Under the server, select the Directory Service object and from the File menu, select Properties.17. Click Check Now.18. Synchronize the DS/IS using the following steps.19. Start the Exchange 5.5 Administrator and navigate down to the server object that you are working on.20. Select the Properties of the server that you are working on21. Click on the Advanced tab22. Click Consistency Adjuster23. On the DS/IS Consistency Adjustment page, check ALL FOUR check boxes, click All inconsistencies, and then click OK24. On the Warning page, click OK.25. Before closing the Administrator program, change the display names:RA Pearson = Pearson Packaging SystemsPEARSON = Pearson26. Install & run the NTDSATRB utility to find duplicate mailbox/NT account issues.

Also complete a FULL backup of the Windows 2000 system. Be sure to include the Registry & the System State. This will give you a rollback position in case you need to fully restore the server to the point before you started the installation.Deploy the ADC (Active Directory Connector)
1. Insert the Exchange 2000 setup disk & wait for the autorun.2. Click on ADC Setup (bottom icon)3. Check BOTH boxes4. Choose a service account that the service should run under, and complete the installation5. Setup a Connector using the following steps6. Create an OU in AD called “Exchange 2000”. You will need this OU later.7. Open the ADC MMC snap-in (found in the START Menu)8. RMB on the icon representing the ADC on your server & choose New > Recipient Connection Agreement.9. General Tab: Type a meaningful name for this CA (like: Exchange > AD). Choose “One-Way” (Exchange to Windows)10. Connections Tab: Enter appropriate servers, accounts & passwords for AD (Windows) & Exchange11. Exchange Tab: Add the Recipients from the Exchange Organizationa. Add the OU “Exchange 2000” that you created in step #5 (Default destination)12. Windows Tab: Leave blank.13. Schedule Tab: Check “Always”. Check “Replicate the entire Directory…..”14. Leave the rest of the Tabs with their default settings. Prep the Forest & the Domain1. setup forestprep & choose “upgrade existing 5.5″2. setup domainprep Upgrade Exchange 5.5 to 2000

Agree to the ELUA3. Change the Installation folder to: c:exchsrvr4. Choose “Typical”5. When setup is complete, make front server a “Front Server” Configure Instant Messaging

Locate the Instant Messaging (RVP) container. RMB & choose New > Instant Messaging virtual server, then click Next.6. Enter a display name that will be easy to use, then click Next.7. Select the IIS website on which this IM virtual server will reside (usually the default website)8. Enter the DNS domain name with which the server will be identified through DNS.9. Click “Allow This Server To Have User Accounts” checkbox.10. Configure each NT account through “Active Directory Users & Computers”11. RMB on the account, and choose “Exchange Tasks”OWA
