Sample – simple Steps to Exchange 55 – 2k in the same domain

March 4, 2010

These steps worked for this project. Not all projects details can be generalized this way. Always research your environment and rationalize you solutions based on your facts and requirements.

1. On the target domain controller cleanup and any existing DNS records for the target domain.

2. Backup the DC / servers

3. DCPROMO the DC / server to a Domain, install DNS during this operation and select Native Mode operations for the DC / server.

Note:

Exchange 2k does NOT run on Windows 2003.

4. Ghost the DC in a domain.

5. Add the Exchange 5.5 server to the domain first (this is critical).

a. Install Exchange 5.5 on the Exchange 5.5 server – reboot.

b. Install Exchange 5.5 SP3 on the Exchange 5.5 server – reboot.

c. Install Exchange 2k ADC connector on the Exchange 5.5 server – reboot.

6. On the DC add “administrator to:

a. Exchange Domain servers Group

b. Exchange Enterprise servers Group

c. Exchange Services Group

d. Schema Admins Group

7. On the Exchange 5.5 server in the ADC snapin tool add:

a. A replication agreement between the Exchange server and the DC.

b. A public folder replication agreement between the Exchange server and the DC.

c. Execute a “Replicate Now” to test the agreements and look for errors.

d. On the Exchange 5.5 server put a shortcut on the desktop for the:

i. Microsoft Exchange Administrator

ii. Exchange 2k ADC snapin tool

e. Launch Outlook and setup a profile for the administrator. This is to test / verify we can talk to the Exchange server.

8. Ghost the Exchange 5.5 server in the domain.

9. In DNS make sure the Exchange 5.5 server is resolved.

a. Also in DNS setup reverse lookup domains that allow non-secure updates / forwarding to Goliath for:

i. 10.40.10.*, 10.40.20*

ii. 10.40.100.* 10.40.110.*

10. Add the Exchange 2k server to the domain

a. Install Exchange 2k on the server – reboot

b. Install Exchange 2k SP3 on the server – reboot

c. Launch Outlook and setup a profile for the administrator. This is to test / verify we can talk to the Exchange server.

11. On the Exchange 2k server put a shortcut on the desktop for the:

a. Microsoft Exchange Administrator

b. Exchange 2k ADC snapin tool

12. In DNS make sure the Exchange 2k server is resolved.

13. Ghost the Exchange 2k server in the domain.
