Sun Solaris 2.6 Setup OS Install – Setup

Always verify and adapt these recommendations for the OS Install.

Solaris 2.6 Setup

1.      Insert the Solaris OS disk into the disk drive
2.      Press Stop + A
3.      Type boot cdrom
4.      Choose English, and USA –Ascii only
5.      Press continue
6.      Press continue
7.      Press continue
8.      Enter the Fully Qualified hostname (ie, mordor.newhost.com)
9.      Press continue
10.  Choose Yes for the “Networked?” screen.
11.  Press continue
12.  Choose your primary interface (usually hme0)
13.  Press continue
14.  Enter the IP address for your OUTSIDE interface
15.  Press continue
16.  Press continue
17.  Choose “Other”
18.  Press continue
19.  Press continue
20.  Choose “Yes” for “Is system part of a subnet?”
21.  Press continue
22.  Enter the Proper Netmask for your outside IP (ie 255.255.0.0)
23.  Press continue
24.  Select Geographic Region
25.  Press Set
26.  Choose US and Eastern
27.  Press continue
28.  Enter the proper date and time
29.  Press continue
30.  Press continue
31.  Choose initial setup
32.  Press continue
33.  Press continue
34.  Press continue
35.  Choose “Developer system support”
36.  Press continue
37.  Press continue
38.  Press continue
39.  Choose Auto Layout
40.  Select “ / , /usr, /var and /swap”
41.  Press continue
42.  Choose Customize
43.  Delete everything on the list except overlap and / .  Delete all numbers except the overlap value.

Use the following value table
0          /           128
1          swap    256
2          overlap            (should be pre configured to use the entire disk space)
3          /usr      600
4
5
6          /var      free space

44.  Click OK
45.  Press continue
46.  Press continue
47.  Choose Begin
48.  Choose Auto Reboot
49.  Wait until all filesets have been installed
50.  Set the root password (we are currently using $shadow$)
51.  Choose n for “…Autoshutdown”
52.  Choose y for “…Save answer”
53.  Login as root
54.  Cd to the /etc directory
55.  Edit a file using vi hostname.<interface>   ( ie hostname.le0  You are creating a new file)
56.  Enter the hostname-internal.newhost.com (ie mordor-internal.newhost.com)
57.  Write and quit out of vi.
58.  Edit the hosts file
59.  Enter the ip address of the inside, tab once and enter the same name you just created above.
60.  Write and quit out of vi.
61.  Edit the resolv.conf file
62.  Enter domain, tab once and enter the domain name (e.g. domain           newhost.com)
63.  Press enter
64.  Enter nameserver, tab once and enter the IP of the DNS machine (e.g. nameserver       10.99.200.51)
65.  Write and quit out of vi.
66.  Cd to /etc/inet
67.  Edit the netmasks file
68.  Enter the ip address of the inside, tab once and enter the proper netmask (ie 255.255.255.0).

Write and quit out of vi.
70.  Sync;reboot
71.  Login as root
72.  Ping the router
73.  Ping an internal client machine
74.  Use nslookup
