Application Testing

Posted in Application,Web Services (250) by Guest on the October 20th, 2009

Testing plays a critical role in the development of the web site and its long-term maintenance. While smaller web sites—especially those with more limited budgets—may not need to follow the formal testing procedures that are required for large-scale, commercial web sites, every site needs to be thoroughly tested to ensure that it’s error-free, user-friendly, accessible, and standards compliant.

  1. Enhanced authentication features
  2. Guest Authentication,
  3. Permit Authentication Error,
  4. User Management

OS Jobs Scripts Can Do

Posted in Application,Networking (340),Web Services (250) by Guest on the October 14th, 2009

Windows Script Host provides objects for manipulation of your scripts. Here are some of the tasks that these objects and services can do for you:

  1. Map network drives
  2. Connect to printers
  3. Modify environment variables e.g. Temp
  4. Run basic functions such as CreateObject and GetObject
  5. Print a message to a Message Box on screen
  6. Modify keys and values in the registry

The big picture of the scripting model

There are three layers in the script model.

  1. Top  Layer:  ActiveX, COM, DLL’s (You have to know your boundaries so I won’t go any further into ActiveX)
  2. Middle Layer:  Script Engines VBScript, and JSCript   (Equivalent of .bat files)
  3. Bottom Layer: WSH with :CSCript, WSCript, NWSCript also IE Explorer  (Equivalent of DOS or CMD.exe)

So what is a Script?

A Windows 2000 script is a program written in a special language called JScript and VBScript.  (If you prefer you could use Perl or Rexx)  These scripting languages are designed to create short applications that provide quick solutions to network problems.

Different Types of Scripts

  • vbs – VBScript files WSH
  • js – JScript files for WSH
  • wsf – Project file, container object for WSH files
  • bat – DOS batch files
  • html – Familiar ‘markup’ language.
  • asp – Active Server Pages for webs

What is WSH ? (Windows Scripting Host)

  • Windows Scripting Host is aptly named, think of it as providing an environment for hosting scripts. When a logon script arrives from the server, WSH makes sure objects and services are available for the script.  It also check security and passes the script to the appropriate script engine. Example engine: ActiveX.
  • WSH is ideal for non-interactive scripting jobs, such as logon configuration, administrative scripting, or machine automation

MySQL Installation Notes on Windows 200x and IIS 6 / 7

Posted in Application,Security (1500),Web Services (250) by Guest on the October 13th, 2009

This document describes the steps necessary to do a basic mySQL database engine installation on a computer running Windows 2000x Server and IIS 6.

What you’ll need

Windows 200x Server running Internet Information Server (IIS) 6.0

A copy of the mySQL binary distribution for Windows NT / 200X

The Steps:

Download the mySQL binary for Windows NT /200x from mysql.com downloads

Unzip the archive using WinZip or other utility to a temporary folder.

Run the setup.exe program

Install to c:mysql. If you want to install it somewhere else, install it there first and move it later.

Open a command prompt (Start, Run…, type cmd)

Switch to the c: drive

Type cd mysqlbin

Load the mySQL daemon: type mysqld –install

Close the command prompt window

Go to Start, Control Panel, Services

Highlight the line with mySQL and make sure the Startup column says Automatic. If not, click Startup, Automatic.

Click the Start button in the Services toolbar to start the mySQL service.

Close the Services Manager.

That’s it. You are now ready to create a mySQL table and populate it with data.

Basic SQL Parameters

Posted in Application,Security (1500),Web Services (250) by Guest on the October 10th, 2009

Memory, max size in 2 kb units available to SQL

User connections, max number of worker threads that are available for SQL server process, default is 255.

Max Worker Threads, the number of worker threads that are available for SQL server processes. Default is 255.

SMP concurrency, controls the number of threads SQL server will release to NT for execution

Hash buckets, number of buckets for hashing paged to buffers in memory.

Max Async 10, the number of outstanding asynchronous i/o’s that can be issued.

Max Lazywrite io, tunes the priority of batched asynchronous i/o’s that can be issued or comparable to max async io, but specified to the lazywriter.

Free buffers, determines the threshold of free buffers available to the system.

Procedure Cache, percentage of memory allocated to the procedure cache after SQL server memory needs are met.

TempDB in Ram, size of the tempDB database in RAM.  The value 0 causes  TempDB to reside on a disk device: the default is master.

Setting your MySQL Administrator password and creating Guest Passwords

Posted in Application by Guest on the October 8th, 2009

Once MySQL installed & operational, you should immediately set the password for your administrator account (called “root”) and set up at least one guest account, which has limited privileges. Iin the case of the example specified below, the user named “guest” only has SELECT privileges for the database database_name and all tables (specified by the .*) within that database, which works fine for most applications (PHP, etc.) requiring access to a database to pull information out.

  • Open command prompt/command line (Start, Run…, type cmd).
  • Type cd mysql/bin
  • Type mysql –u root mysql to login to the mysql database (contains user table)
  • Type UPDATE user SET Password=PASSWORD(‘new_password’) WHERE user=’root’;
  • Type FLUSH PRIVILEGES; to reset user rights
  • Type exit.
  • Type mysql –u root –p mysql to login to the mysql database (contains user table). You will be    prompted for a the password for the root user.
  • To create guest user account:
    • Type GRANT SELECT ON database_name.* TO guest@’%’ IDENTIFIED BY ‘password’;
    • This will grant SELECT privileges to the user guest when coming from any domain or IP (the ‘%’) using password as the password.
  • Do Step #8 above for every database you want the guest account to have access to.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)

Posted in Application,Projects (400),Web Services (250) by Guest on the October 2nd, 2009

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural style that supports service orientation. Service orientation is a way of thinking in terms of services and service-based development and the outcomes of services. A service:

  • Is a logical representation of a repeatable business activity that has a specified outcome (e.g., check customer credit; provide weather data, consolidate drilling reports)
  • Is self-contained
  • May be composed of other services
  • Is a “black box” to consumers of the service

SOA style It is based on the design of the services – which mirror real-world business activities. SOA separates functions into distinct units (services), which can be distributed over a network and can be combined and reused to create business applications.
